Hi there,
First of all thanks for your help in advance! Trying to design a proof of concept in this space is mighty tricky given the lack of information on the web, so thanks for all your knowledge in advance!
I’m preparing to make a rough proof of concept for a project, and just want to make sure I have what I need clear in my head so I don’t go purchasing things I don’t need or forget anything important!
I’m wanting to make a solution to test out Apple and Google passes using a simple RPi (which I already have a few variants of). If I understand correctly, I believe I could order the $75.00 DIY module and hook this up to the Pi via UART? I understand there’s a SDK, but do you have any information on the specific commands used to communicate with the DIY device? Otherwise does the DIY module ship with access to the basic SDK to use?
Does the DIY module still support VAS and Smart Tap?
Finally, how do we go about setting up a test API key with PassNinja to test out some of those awesome features, including native rewards enrollment? I’ve created an account already, but the documentation says to get in touch in order to get that API key.
Since I’m all the way here in Australia, I just want to make sure I’ve got everything correct before spending $70.00 on shipping alone! 🙂
Many thanks again, look forward to hearing from you!
Best,
Frank

> I believe I could order the $75.00 DIY module and hook this up to the Pi via UART?
The DIY module only supports USB and BLE so you’ll have to work with those interfaces.
> do you have any information on the specific commands used to communicate with the DIY device?
Our docs covers what we provide with each reader we sell right now. We have much more sample code and tools behind the scenes but don’t expose it these days since the support overhead is more than we can handle.
> Does the DIY module still support VAS and Smart Tap?
Yes, both protocols are supported in hardware but require some application level software to carry out a full pass validation. At PassNinja you can find services to complete the solution, if needed.
> how do we go about setting up a test API key with PassNinja to test out some of those awesome features, including native rewards enrollment?
The PassNinja service is still coming online so many features require direct engagement with their support staff. You can use the chat widget on their site or email them at info@passninja.com for help. They are quick to answer during work days on Eastern Standard Time.
I hope this was helpful, let me know if you have more questions.
best,
Richard -
