Hi can you use the NFC Extender patch to work with ApplePay or New Contactless EMV Card?
Thanks Chris
March 6, 2016 at 4:08 pm #54694Hi Chris, you’ll need to elaborate in order to answer that question. The NFC Patch Kit is nothing more than 2 wound coils connected to each other and tuned to respond to magnetic fields modulated at 13.56MHz (the frequency of NFC). So it will work with any NFC equipment but vary in it’s performance based on geometries of the antennas used. For instance, the NFC Patch Kit was designed and tuned for use on the Nexus 7 (2013) which has an antenna geometry of roughly 64mm x 56mm. If you put the NFC Patch on a device with a smaller antenna size (like many HTC phones have) then the coupling between the two would be negatively impacted. Same goes on the tag side, if patch kit antenna doesn’t match with the ApplePay or contactless EMV cards antenna geometries performance would be impacted.
With all that said, it’s definitely possible to make it work but it may require customizing the NFC Patch Kit design for your specific use case. I would suggest you purchase an NFC Patch Kit to try it out and if performance is poor then engage us for a custom design. More details on that on this thread.
thanks,
RichardMarch 6, 2016 at 5:17 pm #54695Thank you Richard I will order the extender units to test but I was under the impression that we could not use the extender for financial payments such as Apple Pay. Our plan is to create a new mobile phone case that extends the NFC from the back of the iPhone mobile to the front cover which is the part that the customer uses to pay with.
The other user case is a marketing play where we wish to extend the NFC on an contactless POS Terminal in a chain of retail stores 5000 POS units. The customer taps not on the original POS but on the marketing POSTER attached approx 15-20cm from the original POS. The customer pays with their Contactless EMV bank card by tapping it off the extender powered NFC Poster. This POS-TER Advertising is what we need to be sure will work.
Can you advise me if these scenarios will work?
Regards
