Is it possible to use FloJack and the SDK so our iOS POS can accept ApplePay payments? Thanks in advance.
Hi Colin, the FloJack hardware is indeed capable of taking Apple Pay. The problem is certification, a costly process. The gist is that in order to *process* Apple Pay over the EMV contactless interface (NFC), you need to get the proper certificates from the payment schemes (eg Visa, Mastercard, American Express, etc.). Unlike the EMV contact interface (Chip and Pin cards) that was standardized over a decade ago, the contactless interface was just published in 2013 and therefore is much more fragmented. By that I mean that each payment scheme implemented their own way of interacting with credentials over the contactless interface. Because of this, each scheme has their own certification requirements. Hence you need to run each set of tests independently at a 3rd party lab to get the certification. These certifications run $30k+ each and need to be renewed every 2 years (unlike EMV contact which is every 3 years).
At Flomio we are preparing a pre-certified bundle that will streamline the process of certification. The integration will need to be done independently by each payment processor to insure the security of their stack. As devices like the new Square reader become common, we expect the certification requirements to converge and costs for lab testing to fall. In the interim we are just preparing for that opportunity.
Thank you Richard. Yes I’ve seen the Square reader, but I understand it only works with their POS app. I’ll watch for developments at Flomio.
