How does the Murata Magicstrap work when glued directly to metal, or flush with the surface of metal in a cavity? Do you have any other info on NFC tags that read on metal. I watched your video about antenna sizes, which shows the 3 metal NFC rings, and I was surprised to see them. I thought NFC didn’t work “in metal”??
Thanks, Rob
Hi Rob, the Murata Magicstrap will be desensitized if glued directly to metal or flush within a metal cavity. What you will need to add is ferrite material to shield the desensitizing effect of the metal from the tag’s magnetic properties. You can buy this material in adhesive-backed sheets from companies like FerriShield and apply as needed. It’s important that you order the proper frequency band (High Frequency or HF in the case of NFC inlays) since ferrite material can come in several different tuned bands.
There’s a lot of misconceptions about what NFC can actually do. With the right tools and know how, you can create inductive coupling in and around a lot of different materials including metal. It’s just a matter of how much power, geometry, and design control you have available. This can happen by tweaking the reader side or the tag side of the equation. As you saw in the video, it’s sometimes more an art than pure science.
Glad to help answer more questions or prepare demo videos to clarify things further. Send over ideas as you conceive them.
Hi Richard, thanks for your response. Would you expect Magicstrap tags mounted on top of FerriShield to work with your Flojack?
Hi Robert, yes Murata tags mounted on ferrite material will be readable with the FloJack.
