How small can an NFC device be? Can one be embedded in a silver or gold ring without issues?
There’s NFC tags as small as a grain of rice.
They’re used in implantable applications for livestock and other bio-tracking use cases (open your door with your hand).
With that said, rings can be problematic because metal doesn’t play well with NFC. If you’re willing to consider plastic, ceramic, or some other non-conductive material you’ll be able to pull it off. For instance, there’s these bird tags that are ABS plastic that are large enough to fit on a finger. Might be a simple way to test out your idea.
Is there a source of NFC bird bands? I have an idea for an application.
