Is it possible to implement ONLY the VAS back and forth via any of Flomio’s hardware offerings?

I’m not interested in using VAS for a loyalty card implementation but, rather, a NFC-based identity exchange.

For example, I’d love to leverage the VAS protocol such that iPhone users could have an Apple Wallet “card” (containing their unique ID w/ my service) and interact with a door reader, for example, to gain entry to a room.

Hi Dan, it’s currently possible to exchange VAS protocol messages via the FloBle EMV and the FloBLE Plus only. This can be used to read NFC passes in Apple Wallet for loyalty or any other identity use case, like the door example you suggested.

It’s worth mentioning that you need more than just VAS capability for the auto-present feature to work. The iPhone will only enter VAS mode in one of two ways: 1) user selects NFC capable pass (or credit card) is selected inside Apple Wallet, or 2) via Enhanced Contactless Polling (ECP). ECP enables the frictionless experience most people associate with Apple Pay and the Tap-to-Pay workflow.

ECP is supported on our FloBLE readers as well as basic VAS, but requires custom firmware in order to select the relevant Apple Wallet pass for the use case. We are working with beta customers to deploy solutions with ECP but have yet to launch it as a scalable product offering.
