When will the backers receive the flojacks?
March 5, 2013 at 5:26 am #1826Yeah, any idea on the actual shipping date? I understood it would have been March…
March 7, 2013 at 6:32 am #1844We’ve been working hard to try and get development done for a full production run of FloJacks. The great news is that we’re able to read a wide range of NFC Forum tags. Furthermore, we’ve successfully proven out writing to Type 2 tags from many different manufacturers. There have, however, been some unforeseen challenges we’re still overcoming.
For instance, reading credit card sized tags like these has been tough given the small FloJack antenna size and limited power. The original case design had the PCB mounts along the case walls preventing the maximum antenna size possible. Given that the antenna is hollow we shifted the mounts to the center to increase the antenna area. This has boosted the effectiveness of reading larger inlays.
We’ve also encountered issues with sourcing some of the key parts of our original design, like the audio jack. We built all our FloJack prototypes using the Square audio jacks (since getting them was free and easy) but as it turns out the size and trim of these jacks is very unique. We tried every vendor we could find, but no one carried anything remotely similar to the Square jack we made our designs for. We finally gave up and went with something larger. We have to do a PCB redesign to accomodate the longer audio jack. The impact of the notch you see to here (left) is that it slices through several key electrical traces.
So we’ll need to free up new board space to re-route these traces. To do so we had to choose a smaller and surface mount battery holder (right).
Needless to say, it’s been quite an adventure to get this far. We suspect that the effect of these changes will push our shipment date out by at least a month. We’re currently shooting to start shipping units on the week of April 22, 2013. To pull this off, we will need to get our Electrical and Mechanical designs tested and signed off by March 19th, 2013.
PCB production, population, and assembly takes about 3 weeks but Mechanical tooling for the new case design could take as long as 4 weeks. Our choice of a through-hole jack brace -although more robust- requires a cantilever tool that is more complicated to make than a simple mold.
Overall though, we’re stoked with the improvements we’ve made. Based on the feedback we’ve gotten from our beta testers, we think it will greatly improve user experience and the life span of the product. We’re excited to get the FloJacks shipped out to our customers as soon as we can so we hope you can bare with us a bit longer.

March 7, 2013 at 6:34 am #1846Ok, that’s cool. But you didn’t give any hint on the actual shipping date. Please give us some predictions.

March 12, 2013 at 3:10 pm #1871Great Work , thanks for the update.
April 18, 2013 at 11:10 pm #2164I’m wondering what is the situation as of now, are you guys ready to ship Flojack on April 22?
April 22, 2013 at 12:28 pm #2172Hello Prachyathit, this has been somewhat of a nightmare for us. We have signed off on our design but setting up our supply chain has been a challenge. We still have not placed the order with the factories and it takes them 4-5 weeks to deliver once the order has been placed. The delays have to do with finding the best price for the parts and making sure the quality of these parts will not impact FloJack’s performance. We are verifying a couple more key parts today and hope to be able to place the 1,000 unit order tonight/tomorrow.
thank you for your patience.
April 24, 2013 at 8:12 pm #2244Hey all – we have a new update on FloJack production schedule and ship date:
Flomio Blog: Mass Produced FloJacks
Thanks!
May 21, 2013 at 10:07 pm #3546Are you on track for the 26th May for shipping?
May 21, 2013 at 10:52 pm #3547Hey Chris, the long poll of the production supply chain are many internal PCB components like the audio plug. These parts are in transit to our assembly house but have not yet arrived. We’re hoping fully assembled PCBs will arrive at Flomio headquarters. The reality is that with our experience something can go wrong that can easily push out the ship date by as much as a week.
once we know more we’ll post it on this thread. thanks.
June 14, 2013 at 7:05 am #3880Hi any news about ship date ?
June 19, 2013 at 6:44 am #3890Hi Any news about the shipping date yet?
Cheers
June 20, 2013 at 1:26 am #3898We’re still waiting on the factories. We got some production samples and we weren’t happy with the enclosure finish 🙁 We’re preparing another update to keep everyone informed but below you can see the main quality issue we were not ok with.

June 24, 2013 at 2:30 am #3918When will the backers receive the flojacks?
when I can get my order goods ?
June 25, 2013 at 8:07 am #3922Hi, I ordered (and payed) a Flojack 8 weeks ago.
What is your plan B if the factory does not deliver? do you have an alternative supplier? what date of shipping can you definitely confirm?
Cheers,
B.Borchert
June 25, 2013 at 11:29 am #3923Please update the shipping date. June 21 has slipped, what is the new target?
June 26, 2013 at 5:25 am #3933Thanks everyone for your patience. After slipping so many days, weeks, months … it’s no wonder that you’re upset. We’ve been using the FloJack internally for over a year, making it better as we go, but producing it in bulk has introduced issues we never expected. We’ve gotten through them and just waiting on our manufacturer to finish the first batch of boards and send them to us. Here is a picture of the latest boards coming off the production line:
Once we have them in hand we will being assembling and shipping them out immediately.
thanks again for your patience.
